Luís Duarte de Almeida
Luís Duarte de Almeida is Professor of Jurisprudence (Full Professor) at NOVA University in Lisbon; Researcher at CEDIS — R&D Centre on Law and Society; and Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He was educated at the University of Lisbon (BA, 1999; Masters, 2003) and Oxford University (DPhil, 2011). He specialises in legal theory and philosophy and legal argumentation and writes and teaches extensively in these fields. Before joining NOVA University in 2022, he was (since 2017) Professor of Jurisprudence (Full Professor), Reader (2015-2017), and Chancellor’s Fellow (2012-2015) at the University of Edinburgh. Before that, he was Junior Research Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge, and Research Fellow at the University of Girona. He was a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy (2016/17); he is (since 2017) Visiting Professor at KU Leuven University, Belgium; and was appointed as a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Germany, for 2025/26.
